The main gripe I have with the MkI is the slow F2.8-5.8 lens, (which translates to F5.1 - 10.5 cf FF), so it's very hard to isolate subjects with vari-focus. I also use the exposure compensation dial a lot. Without the vary-angle LCD the MkII is a non starter for me. I was very impressed with the MkI and the Vari-angle LCD proved essential (I love my low angle, upright shots), so I may very well add another MkI to my kit and forego the MkII. A bad back meant I had to leave my big, heavy 5DII kit behind. Just back from a landscape photography holiday with the MkI. I miss the exposure compensation knob of the Mark I, and highlights seem to blow out easily. The visibilty of the screen outdoors is abysmal, even in the brightest setting (so the measly viewfinder still would serve a purpose). Sure, the 24-120mm range is a welcome step forward, but other than that, I am a bit struggling with the camera. One thing that struck me was that the image quality and noise levels were below my expectations for a camera with this sensor size, so sticking with the Mark I at the moment is a good idea. A pity there's no flip out rotating screen though, but the viewfinder add-on supposedly uses the screen's data, so full on-screen menus and through-the-lens preview when using the viewfinder add-on with the Mark II apparantly. Mostly I'm doing landscapes, but I love macros too, and the new one says it'll focus for 5cm macros, which is what I'm pulling out my cheap point and shoot for at the moment, so I'm looking forward to that being added to the Mark II. I'm waiting for some after-release hands on reviews, but I'll probably grab the G1X mk II. I will continue to use the Mk I for the foreseeable future. Looking forward to the MK II with the greater zoom range and touch screen. I had the MK I version but the sluggish performance and limited zoom range for the heft made me not use it much. That way I could have the best of both worlds.lol.

Send my G1X back to Canon Japan and have it fitted with the Mk II's zoom lens, upgrade the DSP to the DiGiC 6 and flash a new firmware. I'll give you a full rundown on the Mk II Official Site. Rich Road edited this topic 93 months ago. So no upgrades till 2015 at the earliest, unless I win the lottery or something. but I like the G1-X so much that I don't feel an urgent need to upgrade. I only recently bought my G1-X and already I'm beginning to worry that I won't be using my 50D and bag of lenses enough to justify the cash tied up in them! The G1-X images are just superb and I can't see a reason to upgrade. I take a lot of architectural shots and the vari-angle screen on this camera is the only type which works for me as so many of my shots are portrait format. A few of us regulars here are willing to take over or assist your duties as a co-admins of this group if you're no longer interested in maintaining it.
Just a while back some of us were trying to reach you, thinking that this group has been orphaned. It's no sports camera but static shots like scenery, portraits and buildings are superb with this camera. I have too many cameras already and I like the G1X's optical viewfinder and Vari-Angle screen despite its so-so performance zoom lens. Do you think it is worth updating to Mark II?
